Inert material makes up the bulk of construction and
demolition waste. Segregation of all recoverable materials will
help maximise efficient use of these bulk materials. Reducing contamination and improving quality will enable
the high
grade application of inert waste materials.
The Building Research Establishment is working with demolition contractors, recycling sites, ready-mix concrete sites and local authorities to develop quality control and markets for recycled aggregates in high grade applications such as ready mix concrete.
The entries in this section will help potential users of recycled aggregates to identify sources of material. For further details on sources, the Aggregates Advisory Service provide listings of fixed recycling sites throughout the UK. For information on recently available material, the Department of the Environment has sponsored BRE to set up a Materials Exchange on the internet which will help with this. Please bear in mind the need to ensure the quality and fitness for purpose of these materials.
Note also that mobile machinery for the production of recycling aggregates can be noisy, dusty and dangerous; its use is controlled by the Environmental Health Departments (EHDs) of local councils. Local EHDs should be informed in good time of plans to use such machines and double check on what is being supplied and where it is to be used.

the then new cold asphalt technique - hence Colas, COLd ASphalt.
Technical recycling details: on-site 'road recycling uses existing
failed surface as a linear quarry; produces a thin surfacing incorporating
recycled rubber that can make roads quieter. Damaged layers of road surface are
revitalised, mixed with binder (eg bitumen emulsion, foamed bitumen, or cement) and
relaid, conserving natural resources, reducing quarrying and costs. Hot on-site carriageways recycling uses Repave
machine to weld new materials,
so a tack coat is not needed. Alternatively, existing surfaces can be planed-off and transported to a nearby self-contained plant,
for re-use at the site or in later projects. Planings can be mixed with other recycled products such as glass, china clay, crumb rubber;
greater quality control may be maintained at the plant, enabling consistent formulated mix.
Recycol bitumen emulsion is formulated so the bitumen mainly coats the finest aggregate particles, forming a rich bituminous mortar that encapsulates the larger aggregates and binds them together under compaction.
The Foam Mix process preferentially attaches tiny specks of bitumen to the finest aggregate
particles - particularly effective with cold, damp aggregates - and can process prepared construction waste and other marginal materials.
The Fibredec system is directly layable onto a compacted granular base, saving
new materials and reducing subsequent disposal problems.' (Updated August 2004)
